OUR HISTORY

Where we came from....

Confluence 2018 – Back to the Future, Celebrating 20 Years and Looking to the Next 20 Years.

We often forget to take time to reflect on past successes and to remember all of the steps taken that got us where we are today. As the Confluence Conference planning committee began brainstorming topics for this year’s conference, we realized that this is a milestone year.  Confluence is 20 years in the making! Some important historical milestones include the following:
·        1999 - The Drinking Water Technology Forum provided an outlet for professionals in Georgia and South Carolina to discuss water related issues.
·        2003 - Water professionals planning the South Carolina Environmental Conference realized a need for a water resources focused gathering to bring professionals together across state lines, and developed a mulit-state water issues workshop.  For two years after that, this workshop was included as a bonus day to the regional Drinking Water Technology forum.
·        2006 - The concept of a standalone water resources conference was born in Charleston, SC.
·        2011- The conference was rebranded as “Confluence” to reflect the intent of the conference – a confluence of professionals from the region.

This year, we are joining together on September 13 and 14 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in beautiful downtown Greenville, SC.  The conference will focus on celebrating 20 years of joint participation and open dialogue.  We are LOOKING BACK at historic decisions that paved the way for today’s landscape. We are celebrating the present, looking at things we are doing TO-day that couldn’t have been envisioned 20 years ago.  We are looking to THE FUTURE and what we are doing now to prepare for a better future.
We are excited to have Mayor Knox White of the City of Greenville to join us for our pre-conference workshop to reflect on Greenville’s Watershed Parks Program.
Our Keynote Speaker this year will be Apollo astronaut Charles Duke.  Charles Moss “Charlie” Duke, Jr., is an American former astronaut, retired U.S. Air Force officer and test pilot.  As Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 16 in 1972, he became the tenth and youngest person to walk on the moon.  We can all learn about setting the stage for a better future through reflecting on Mr. Duke’s experiences.
As always, this gathering will be different than other conferences.  We will limit the Powerpoints, and focus on back and forth dialogue, panel discussions, and speaker-audience interaction. Water industry leaders will have the opportunity to network and develop relationships with other decision makers across the region.  We look forward to seeing you at this milestone conference!
