Mario graduated from the East Berlin Economic Faculty. During the fall of the Berlin Wall, he was part of the student movement. Later, he worked as a journalist before joining Gruner+Jahr (G+J), a leading European publishing house. For over ten years at G+J, he worked internationally, overseeing publishing and establishing printing houses in Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia. While at G+J's headquarters in Hamburg, he was responsible for the internationalization of magazines such as GEO before taking over the markets for Eastern Europe and new markets with an office based in Warsaw. Mario left Gruner+Jahr in 2006, served as an advisor to international media companies, and supported startups in the Adriatic region. He led Berlin's Holzmarkt and Genossenschaft für urbane Kreativität, focusing on sustainable urban development.

The Holzmarkt adventure began with Bar 25, one of Berlin's most famous underground clubs founded in 2003. It quickly became a legendary venue, attracting notable figures like Quentin Tarantino, who hosted private parties there. Located in the heart of an urban area, Bar 25 closed in 2010 to make way for the construction of exclusive penthouse apartments overlooking the river. This sparked resistance, reaching its peak in 2008 when 87% of the Friedrichshain Kreuzberg population demanded access to the waterfront in a referendum. Juval and Mario developed an alternative concept for the area. With the Holzmarkt collaborative urban creativity project, they convinced the Swiss pension fund Abendrot to provide the necessary funds to purchase the land, and construction officially began in May 2013.
